1. Homework is given as a positive reinforcement of work covered during the day or week or as a revision exercise.
2. Homework is given to help children focus and develop good learning strategies. We encourage parents to let teachers know if the child is taking too long to finish homework.
3. Parents are asked to write a note if their child is unable to do homework due to inability or for any other reason eg family event.
4. Homework will be corrected by the teacher.
5. Children may take responsibility for homework by correcting their own mistakes.
6. Teachers use homework as an indication of level of understanding of pupils (assessment) and will explain concepts/ideas again to pupils who may have difficulties.
7. Teachers pay attention to general presentation of homework i.e. handwriting, spellings, neatness, content when correcting.
8. If children continue to neglect homework (without note from parent/ guardian) a note home may be issued or parent/guardian may be contacted.
9. Teachers take into consideration the background and ability of children when giving/checking homework.
10. Children may use homework sheets or workbooks in Junior and Senior Infants. Parents may be asked to sign above items and they may be used as a form of communication between school and home.
11. Several teachers ‘publish’ homework on Aladdin for the week.
12. As a general rule, homework is not given on Fridays. There may be other days when homework is not given in a particular class or to all classes.
